Preferred Models
- Commercial two-way radios are used exclusively for our feeds, as they provide superior reception & audio quality over scanners or SDRs.
- Our standard radio hardware consists of one of two models:
- Kenwood TK-7180 (Analog only)
- Kenwood NX-700 (Analog & NXDN Digital)
- Other commercial radios (such as Motorola) may be used as long as they perform well & utilize line level audio, not the speaker jack.
- The service manual will show how to tap into line level audio for your specific radio.
Kenwood Notes
- Audio is tapped from the radio via the rear DB25 port using pins 17 (RX Filtered Audio Output) and 18 (Ground).
- Do not use the speaker jack. The DB25 port provides superior audio quality.
- Prebuilt audio cables for the TK-7180/NX-700 can be purchased on eBay at the following link:
- Alternatively, you may assemble your own cable using a DB25 connector and a 3.5mm audio jack.
